In honor of Mother’s Day, we asked our mothers to reflect on the years they spent feeding their families (us!). Thanks moms!
The kitchen was the heart of our house, and I loved it when we could sit down together for meals. I enjoyed cooking (and still do!) and learned a lot from cooking shows that aired on PBS at the time. Since we lived in California, we were always able to get such great ingredients. I experimented and tried to cook a variety of meals, even though my son didn’t always eat them. We would grill a lot because everyone would eat those meals. My daughter showed more interest in cooking, so I have fond memories of having her in the kitchen. One of our favorite dishes to make was spaghetti and meatballs. They were always a hit.

Born and raised in Salinas, California, “the salad bowl of the world”, I ate artichokes, lettuce, and beans on a daily basis, very little meat or sugar – no fast foods. I thank my parents to this day for the great start in life, which has sustained me into my eighth decade. I used most of their ideas in raising my daughters but I am so grateful now that they employ good nutrition, with outstanding presentation and variety of many types of food, and thus make eating a real pleasure and celebration in addition to a way to be fit and healthy.
