I finally did it. I finally made hummus. I know it’s easy. I know it tastes so much better when it is made fresh. I know it is cheaper to make it, than to buy it. I know that you can control the taste and ingredients when it is homemade. But I still bought it; flavored with olives, herbs, and plain; in large tubs and single serving size containers.
And, last week, I looked at the many cans of garbanzo beans (chickpeas) in my cupboard, and decided to make hummus. I found a recipe on the Vitamix website that called for sesame seeds (which I had) instead of tahini (which I did not have). Whipping up a batch took about five minutes and resulted in a large amount of creamy hummus! It didn’t have the bitter edge that the store-bought hummus had and I gobbled it up with GF chips and cucumber slices. It was also a hit with both of my boys, including the older one, who is not usually a fan of hummus.
5 Ways hummus helps you feed your family:
- Serve as a dip with crackers or chips
- Spread on bagels
- Use as a wrap filling with spinach leaves, grated carrots, and cucumber slices
- Make a mezze platter with pita, olives, roasted peppers, and hummus
- Take on a picnic with carrot and celery sticks
I am now a homemade-hummus convert, and I’m here to tell you – you, too, can make a large batch of silky, healthy, hummus in 10 minutes or less. Hummus is a great potluck dish because it accommodates many special diets and is enjoyed by all ages. The hummus recipe below is vegetarian, vegan, low-fat, gluten-free, low cholesterol and has no added sugar.
The recipe that I made was from the Vitamix website, but you can make hummus in any brand of mixer with the same ingredients. Adjust the amount of garlic and cumin to taste. To serve the hummus, drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil and sprinkle with paprika for color and visual appeal.
